HUNTERS CREEK Generous (but well-bunkered) wavy greens, wooden bridges and ample, tree lined fairways give Hunter's Creek a pleasant country feel. When this course was crafted from flat, cattle-grazing land, golf architect Lloyd Clifton decided to add diversity with plenty of water. Thus, 13 lakes were created and water comes into play on 13 holes. Many of the 83 bunkers are of the deep pothole variety. While the fairways are spacious and forgiving, they are long, so the tee shot is key. "The drive is at a premium here because of the length of the golf holes," according to Tom Gavin, who helped create and nurture the course. "The course can be a test of long-drive stamina or a reasonable challenge from the blue (6,905 yards) or white (6,521 yards) tees." Regardless of which of the five tees you choose, you still have the daunting elements - wind, water, vegetation and sand - with which to contend.Hunters Creek Golf is open to the public. The par-3 6th hole is a 220-yard (193 from blues) test of patience, skill and accuracy. To the left of the pencil-thin fairway is water, which flows past the green; to the right, woods for half the distance and Little Lake Tern provides company the rest of the way to the green. You need a long iron to thread the space between the water (avoiding a nest of trees on the left, 50 yards from the green) to land on an unforgiving, three-leaf clover-shaped, elevated green -with aforementioned water on your right, water on your left, bunkers in front and back and sloping to irritate you if you err. If the wind is blowing, you take your chances.The 3rd hole, another daring par-3, travels over 195 yards of water to an island green. A sand bunker stretches from tee box to green along the bank of Lake Teal. If you're long, either trees or more water will add to your grief. Interestingly, the four par-5s, which measure 543 to 615 yards (and are long, bunkered and water-centric), are handicapped 15 to 18.
